I'll be discussing on Microsoft Windows platform in this post and let me know if you want for any other platform too(like Linux, MAC, etc).

Let me introduce you to GPU before knowing the actual amount of GPU in your PC. GPU stands for Graphics Processing Unit and is processed under GPU processing as a co-processor. The GPU is used for executing time consuming and compute-intensive applications. As CPU(Central Processing Unit) generally has 2,4 or 8 cores, comparatively GPU has hundreds of smaller cores to work out on tasks. As GPU is used on High Compute-intensive applications, rest of the work is left on CPU instead. These high intensive and time consuming codes are generally of  Gaming applications most of the Games require GPU memory to run.
GPU is generally present on video cards but nowadays they are embedded on Motherboards or CPUs to give some amount of built-in GPU memories like Intel HD Graphics 2000, Intel Extreme Graphics, etc.
