Goal Line Technology in Russia FIFA World Cup 2018

In the season of FIFA, we decided to present up an article on Technology used in Russia FIFA World Cup 2018, Most of you might have heard Goal-line technology before who all are die hard fans of Football. It is avoided mainly in small events due to very high cost of operating that is about $260,000 per stadium and further expenses of $3,900 per game. This technology is being used in this Russia FIFA World Cup 2018 and news are also being heard that 5G will be tested during this FIFA World Cup 2018 which will provide users much better experience, much lower latency, etc.

  • What is Goal-line technology?
Goal-line technology(or Goal decision system) is the use of electronic medium to figure out whether the ball crossed the goal line or not. This technology is used to avoid delays during game, It isn't adopted to replace referees just to assist them in taking decision. This technology avoids further disputes in fans or players that the goal was scored or not.

  • When did Goal-line technology introduced?
Goal-line technology was first introduced in 2014 FIFA World-cup in Brazil. Goal-line technology was successfully used during all 64 matches at the 2014 FIFA World Cup. The camera-based system provided by GoalControl and tested according to the existing FIFA manual by Labosport made history by being the first to be implemented during the senior World Cup. Besides being decisive in the awarding of a goal during the match between France and Honduras, it assisted the match officials in making close calls on several further occasions.
  • Types of Goal-Line Technology?

  1. Cairos-GLT system.
  2. GoalRef
  3. Goal Control
  4. Hawk-eye
Note: Here we will be discussing Ciaros-GLT system and Goal-control because they are mainly used nowadays.
  • How does Goal-line technology works(Goal-Control)?
FIFA is currently using Goal-control technology in which 14 high-speed cameras are installed in the stadium of which 7 are directed towards the mouth of each goal. Even if 3 cameras can see the ball simultaneously then the 3-D image can be generated. These high-speed cameras track ball filtering out players and officials on the field and sends signals to a powerful computer that convert these data bundle to images continuously tracking the ball. When a player shoots to score a goal the computer transmits an encrypted signal in less than a second to smart wrist-watch worn by referee which displays whether Goal is scored or not. The referee still has authority to challenge the decision made by Goal-line technology and announce his own decision. This technology makes life of referee much easier on-field.

  • Advantages

  1. This technology can assist referee in times of hard decision making.
  2. Response time is very fast i.e. less than a second.
  3. If the ball is not visible to all the cameras but atleast 3 cameras can point out the ball it can make the decision with same accuracy.
  • Disadvantages

  1. Cost of maintenance, Installation and operating is very high.
  2. Can't be used in many events due to its cost.

  • How does CAIROS-GLT works?

This technology was developed by Cairos Technologies AG, in partnership with Adidas Sports Equipment, by generating a magnetic sphere to track a ball through an electronic sensor that is attached to the ball. Thin wires that carry electricity are buried around the penalty area, and behind the goal line to form a network, Adidas designed a specifically ball that can not only fixing sensitive sensor inside, but also bear the strong kicks by the players without any damage.
The moving ball affects the unified magnetic field because of the Interference between the copper wires and the magnetic field. The ripple moves over the network to the computer, which determines whether the ball is crossed the line or not, and sends an immediate alarm to the clock in the judgment wrist. However, there were doubts about the accuracy and speed of their results, and they are used in a limited way in some European Championships.
  • Advantages
  1. The CAIROS GLT is independent of outside conditions, weather, sun light and shadow, wind, fog or snow.
  2. Even when the visibility of ball is restricted the system detects it with the same accuracy.
  3. It takes up very little space.
  4. It does not affect the stadium infrastructure
  • Disadvantages

  1. It is very expensive.
